What to do after buying a domain
Purchasing a domain is one of the first steps in setting up your online presence. So what do you need to do next? Once you have a domain, it’s time to start working on your website, your brand, and your online audience.
If that sounds daunting, don’t worry. You’ll find many simple solutions to get your business online, and Google Domains partners with the best of them. You can build a website, set up custom email, and grow your online audience efficiently and effectively, without any technical know-how. But while you’ll have plenty of help along the way, it’s important to have a basic game plan that helps you meet your goals. Here are some tips for how to move forward and make the most of your new domain:
Create a website
You don’t need to hire a website developer to have a beautiful, professional website that reflects what you offer. Google Domains integrates with best-in-class companies that enable you to create your own website without any technical or design experience, including: Blogger, Shopify, Squarespace, Weebly, Wix, and Wordpress.
Each one has different costs and options, including secure hosting, customizable templates, and helpful features like drag-and-drop design and mobile site management. Once you purchase your domain, you can browse the various options and get started with the one that feels right for you.
Get custom email
You can build credibility and recognition by using custom email that includes your domain name, like you@yourdomain and info@yourdomain. Google Domains includes custom email for free, allowing you to create up to 100 custom email aliases, which are email address names that get forwarded to your existing email account.
With Google Domains, you can also choose to use G Suite, which provides every user with a professional Gmail account, a dedicated inbox, and up to 30 email aliases. G Suite starts at $5/month/user, and includes Google’s productivity apps for work, including file storage and sharing, collaborative editing docs, video chats, shared calendars, and more. You can add G Suite to your domain after your purchase. If you already have a domain with Google Domains and would like to add G Suite, visit your Domains management page, click on “add email,” then select “get started.”
Simplify domain management
If you have multiple people working on your domain, you can share domain management with other Google users. Each user you add will have permission to manage the domain, including domain registration, web presence (such as email aliases and G Suite accounts), and DNS settings. Advertise your site
If you want to reach new customers online, then advertising and social media marketing might be right for you. You’ll find many reputable, data-driven tools for driving traffic to your website, including
Google AdWords: With AdWords, you can target potential customers when they search on Google for what you have to offer. AdWords works by showing your ads alongside Google Search results based on search terms that you’ve selected. You set your own budget, and only pay when people click on your ads to visit your website. To learn more about AdWords, read Your guide to AdWords.
Facebook ads: With ads on this popular social media site, you can target your audience based on factors like location, age, gender, and interests. You can also target people whose contact info is already in your database, or who have visited your website. Ads are placed via auction—you set a total budget for your ads, as well a bid for how much you’ll pay per ad. Learn more by reading Facebook Ad Basics.
